Biology : Annual or perennial, monoecious, unbranched or scarcely branched urticating herb, erect at first, later twining, to 80 cm tall when supported.
Ecology : Shady deciduous thickets; the same formation on Kalahari sand (mutemwa); dry evergreen thicket (mateshi) in plateau woodland; 780-1500 m alt.
  Closest relative: T. montana (Thwaites) Müll. Arg. from Sri Lanka.
