Biology : Perennial (or ? annual) herb (0,4-)0,6-1 m tall, erect to decumbent, branching near the base and sometimes distally; stems not rooting at base, green, 4-ribbed.

Ecology : Grassland seasonally flooded; marshes; 0-2550 m alt. Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, S. Africa; Madagascar; not in the Comoro Is.; not in Asia (= H. gramineum G. Forster). Very closely related to H. relictum from Colombo (ancient long-distance dispersal?).
