Biology : Annual erect or straggling, mostly much-branched herb, 0,1-1,2 m tall, but can be an unbranched ± ephemeral herb, 10-18 (-25) cm; submerged stems sometimes inflated and occasionally with purplish green spongy growth; young stems 4-angled, ± winged above.

Ecology : By water, rivers, ditches, etc.; temporary pools in rocky or damp sandy places, black soil, wet grassland; often in standing water, usually shallow but also to 60 cm deep in river beds; rice- fields, etc.; 30-1800(-2250) m alt.
