Biology : Shrub or tree, 0,6-8(-11) m tall, usually much-branched and gnarled, or occasionally a dwarf creeping shrublet only 15 cm high; bark grey rough, reticulate and flaking; nodes rather thickened with conspicuous leaf-scars; leaves almost whorled, fleshy.

Ecology : Littoral at or even below high-water mark, coral-rag thicket with Mimusops, Sideroxylon, Combretum schumannii, Drypetes, Adansonia, etc.; exposed to salt spray; drier sides of swamps; 0-5 m alt. From Madagascar to the Pacific Islands
