Biology : Tree 8-30 m, evergreen, secreting latex; with short trunk and spreading branches; young branches smooth, tetragonal. fruits ±poisonous, only endosperm safe to eat, and source of oil (“Alexandrian laurel”)

Ecology : Rocky and sandy sea-shores; 0-20 m alt. – Common drift-seed. Also planted (up to 1200 m alt.) on road-sides. Widespread round the shores of the Indian Ocean: Zanzibar, Pemba; Madagascar, Mascarene Is.;
  tropical Asia, Malaysia; through to Melanesia and Polynesia.
