Biology : Dioecious herb; rhizome narrowly terete, unbranched, 0,2-2 mm Ø; roots 1 per node; stems erect, narrowly terete

Ecology : Shallow sandy or silty areas of the sublittoral subject to slight to moderate wave action, in sheltered seawater to ± 7 m depth; sediment-covered coral reefs.
  2 forms are reported: plants from the Red Sea-Persian Gulf have leaves ± cartilaginous, later becoming bullate; those from the Indian Ocean have more membraneous leaves not bullate with age.
  Egypt; Madagascar, Mauritius, Rodriguez; Saudi Arabia, Yemen (not refound since 18th century), Bahrain, India. – Invasive. Has migrated into the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal
