Biology : Erect or scrambling shrub, or sometimes a small tree (2-)4-6 m tall, or liane to 20 m long; stems to 11 cm , striate and rustypubescent when young; hooks opposite to alternate; stipules very early deciduous.

Ecology : Riverine and montane forest, forest edges, secondary growth in rain-forest belt; on or near termite-mounds (Uganda); 1-1220 m alt. Very variable in size of leaves (up to 40 cm long). – Can be confused with H. obtusifolia.
