Biology : Thorny caudiciform shrub, to 1,5(-6?) m high, the spreading branches to 1 m and to 1 cm , arising from an irregularly shaped, ± fleshy trunk to 0,5 m tall and 2,5 m ; sterile tendrils simple, 4-8 cm long; thorns 0,25-4 cm long, patent, acute.
Ecology : Open bushland, scrub, dry rocky places, basalt rocks; granite outcrops; in partial shade; locally common; 200-1000 m alt. S. Africa (Transvaal).
