Biology : Perennial herb or subshrub, unbranched to much-branched, to >1 m tall, with a woody rhizome.

Ecology : Savanna with Oxythenanthera; open and wooded grassland; often in places subject to burning; also in deciduous woodland and bushland; rocky ground; lava, reddish soils; Protea- Faurea-Combretum fireswept tree-grassland; 1000-2700 m alt.
  Very variable with a series of intermediates.
