Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Evergreen tree to 40-50 m tall and 5 m in girth; bole straight, unbranched for 20-25 m, to 1,2 m ; young trees with long spines (to 12 cm) on the trunk; buttresses narrow, very widely spreading, to 5 m high. Fruits swallowed whole by elephants.

Ecology : River banks in savanna region; Parinari excelsa woodland; forest associations on dry land; semi-deciduous rain-forest; margins of seasonally flooded forest; wide ecological tolerance; 200-1200 m alt.
