Biology : Fleshy shrub 30-75 cm tall; stems numerous from a widely creeping rootstock, oblique or nodding, woody at base, cylindrical, dichotomously branched; branches jointed, gradually thickened towards the nodes.

Ecology : Sandy or stony places with Sesameae, Z. simplex and Vogelia africana; dry rocky places; maritime sandy places; Not in Namibia (= Z. stapffii Schinz).
