Biology : Perennial erect herb or subshrub 0,3-3(-4) m tall from a thick rhizomatous rootstock;

Ecology : Coarse lowland to upland grassland, wooded and bushed grassland, Brachystegia, Acacia, Uapaca and other open woodland, scrub, sometimes gregarious in savanna; locally common; also by rivers in rocky places, old cultivations and plantations; etc...
  S. Africa (NE); Madagascar, Mauritius (formerly cultivated), Réunion.
  Comprises 2 vars. - Var. argyrophylla Verdc., with thick silvery-grey velvety indumentum on stems and leaves (beneath) from W Africa to Sudan. - Var. hookeri in E and S part of range.
  Easily confused with Desmodium salicifolium and also D. tanganyikense , but the latter different in having distinctly jointed pods breaking up into individual segments and leaflets with secondary veins not reaching the margins.
