Biology : Annual herb, branched from the base and usually also above, tuberous rootstock and a thickened stem base to 1,5 cm .
Ecology : Cultivated (usually irrigated) ground; seasonally flooded sandy flats; waste ground; ± sea-level to 2900 m alt. Comprises 3 subspp. Scattered throughout most of Africa; warmer parts of Europe through subtropical and tropical Asia to India.
