Biology : Perennial aquatic herb; stems to 3 m long, 2 mm ; leaves forked twice; fruit with or without basal spines, surface smooth.

Ecology : Stagnant to fast-flowing shallow or deep water, associated with Azolla, Pistia, Nymphaea; in brackish estuaries but not in seasonal, highly alkaline pools; 0-2300 m alt. Almost worldwide distribution (see more in the book)
  Plant tolerant to salt.
