Biology : Shrub or tree 1,5-6-12(-18-25) m, evergreen, with stout ±flattened branches with raised lines decurrent from the petiole bases when young, soon rounded, almost smooth; bark vertically fissured; leaves distinctive with prominent venation on both sides.

Ecology : Evergreen forest of drier types incl. mist forest; forest margins; littoral thicket; fringing forest, stream banks; secondary bush derived from forest; coastal grassy savanna plains (Ghana); sometimes on rocky outcrops, sandy soils, dunes; 0-1900 m alt.
  Very variable in shape and size of leaves. S. Africa, Swaziland.
