Stemless herb with bright orange-red rhizome 1,5-2,5 cm Ø; leaves in 2 rows, 4-7 per shoot, 0,57-1,5 m long, 1-2,5 cm Ø, ± cylindric, ridged, red-brown in lower part, green further up, apex acute; flowering stem 58-90 cm long; peduncle 10-17 cm long; flowers green, cream, buff-pink, or yellow, 4-7 per cluster; pedicel 4-6 mm long; perianth 1,8-2 cm long, tube 0,7-1,3 cm long, lobes 0,7-1,2 cm long; fruit 7 mm Ø. |

Exposed granite domes with Plectranthus amboinicus, Kalanchoe, Aloe vallaris; A. zebrina; also with Euphorbia conspicua, Huernia urceolata, Fockea multiflora; among large boulders; rocky hillsides; sometimes under trees or on termitaria on poor sandy soils; often forming dense large colonies; 100-1500 m alt. |

Closely resembling S. volkensii; near S. sordida. Can be confused with S. burdettii. |

Cultivated in gardens in Zimbabwe. |
