Biology : Acaulescent perennial; rhizome subterranean; leaves solitary, erect, rigid, cylindric, 0,8-3 m long, 2-3 cm thick at middle, apex prickly; juvenile leaves with a concave channel above and 4-6 longitudinal impressed lines on the sides, dull or bluish green; with numerous closely placed transverse pale green bands disappearing with age; mature leaves greyish green, rounded in cross-section; inflorescence lateral, emerging beside the leaf, crowded-corymbose-capitate, 8-10 cm long, open crown to 12-19 cm Ø; peduncle subterranean; flowers solitary above, erect, white sometimes tinged violet; perianth 2,8-3,5 cm long, 0,2-0,3 cm Ø, tube 1,2-1,6 cm long, lobes 0,8-1,3 cm long; berry globose, 1,3-1,5 cm Ø.
Ecology : Dry bushland; may form dense stands; sandy soils at edges of thickets; dense bush; along river; c. 60-550 m alt.
  Variable in colour patterns of leaves, not always due to ecological factors. The plant can be kept in a permanent juvenile state by restricting pot size and by cutting off new offsets.
