Biology : Annual or short-lived perennial herb with a stout vertical rootstock, ?near the base, erect, to 10 cm tall, branching above the base. outwards, mostly 12-40 cm.
Ecology : Damp (at least seasonally) ground, gravel pits, pools and rivers, along roadsides, irrigated land; mostly on sandy or gravelly soil, but also on cracking clay; 170-1370 m alt. Native of Australia; Botswana, S. Africa; Egypt; Taiwan, Japan.
