Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Annual or perennial (with a rootstock) erect trailing or climbing herb 0,5-3 m long; stem striate, glabrous, scabrous, pubescent or slightly hairy particularly near the petiole-bases, sometimes with minute stiff hook-like hairs.
Ecology : In Africa the spontaneous forms are genrally found in various formations, e.g. savanna, grassland, sometgimes near water; 0-2600 m alt. - In Guinean forest and at high altitudes in other formations.
  Comprises 11 subspp. In our area (cf. also Enum. 3: 315-316, 1995, for other synonyms, etc.): - Subsp. unguiculata -[var. unguiculata] [syn.: Dolichos catjang Burm. f.; Vigna catjang (Burm. f.) Walp.; V. unguiculata subsp. cylindrica (L.)
  Cultivated in the tropics and other warmer parts of the world, e.g. in the Mediterranean area Iran, China, S USA, etc. - "Africa is the only continent where wild forms of compea are encountered, and cowpea was also domesticated in Africa"
  Threatened by the parasitic weed Striga geonerioides (Canad. J. Bot. 79: 1225-1240, 2001). Not mapped (cf. Ng & Singh, o.c.).
