Biology : Annual erect or ascending simple or ± branched herb or sometimes a minute ephemeral, less often subshrubby and possibly a short-lived perennial, (0,6-)2-80 cm tall; stems 4-angled or ± winged.

Ecology : Silty places by standing and running water, black soil with grass and sedges by water, seepage zones and pools on rock outcrops in woodland and grassland; also as a weed in rice fields; 0-2000m alt.
