Biology : Perennial herb with fusiform (tuberous) fleshy roots; stems to 1 m long, creeping, creeping-ascending or straggling, green with purple tinge

Ecology : Overgrazed areas; Combretum, Stereospermum, Acacia woodland; moist grassy places; forests (eventually degraded); swamps; mist forest; sunny places; in shade; riverine forest margins; edge of montane forest; 900-3300 m alt.
  A very variable species. The World Checklist of Monocotyledons (Roy. Bot. Gard., Kew) retain 6 varieties: var. africana; - var. diffusa (Tanzania-Malawi); - var. karooica (S Africa and Botswana); - var. krebsiana; - var. manni (Cameroon, Rwanda, Ethiopia
  S. Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland; Cape Verde Isl.; Madagascar, Mascarene Isl.; Saudi Arabia, Yemen; Australia. Has been reported from Bioko/Fernando Poo and Equat. Guinea without precise locality (Cabezas & al. 2009)
