Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Submerged aquatic herb; frond thin, oblong-lanceolate, symmetrical, 5-10 x 2-4 mm, with a stipe c. 5-10 mm long, margins toothed in upper third; fronds forming branching chains, each frond stalked; fertile fronds few, non-stipitate, much smaller, free-floating at water surface; root, if present, 1, cap acute; fruit winged; seed 12-18-ribbed.
Ecology : Freshwater lakes and pools; quiet water; 500-2800 m alt.
  All continents except S. America, mainly in northern temperate zones
