Biology : Monoecious submerged herb; stems to 60 cm tall
  see more in the book
Ecology : With N. welwitschii (Senegal), with N. schweinfurthii (Sudan); rice fields; fresh standing water; often on clayey soil; temporary pools; flooded meadows; often locally dominant; to 1400 m alt.
  Var. robusta W. H. de Wilde occurs in the Lesser Sunda Isl.
  Algeria; Egypt; Botswana, S. Africa; S Europe; Asia to New Caledonia; Australia; naturalized in N. America. – Presence in Ethiopia uncertain (cf. Fl. Eth. & Eritrea 6: 30, 1997).
