Biology : Succulent perennial herb, with a thick fleshy rootstock; stems erect, decumbent or rhizomatous, to 40 cm long, 1,5-3 cm thick, tessellated, with prominent conical tubercles bearing the leaves in usually 5 spiralled series;
Ecology : Steep stony slopes; tussock grassland on rocky slopes; slopes of volcanic crater amongst lava rocks; ± 1150-1300 m alt.
  Comprises 3 subspp.
  Of fairly easy culture.
  Near M. guentheri.
