Ecology and distribution

Biology : Herb 20-55 cm tall; rhizome fusiform or ovoid, 1,4-11x0,3-3 cm, sometimes divided in two; tunic membranous; roots ribbon-like; rhizome surmonted by old leaf-bases, for up to 12 cm; leaves sometimes creating a white pseudostem, often reddish at base, linear or lanceolate, 6-75x0,2-2 cm, apex acute, sessile or nearly so, pilose or almost glabrous; scapes 1-5, 1,2-9 cm x 0,5-2,5 mm; flowers yellow, orange, pinkish, solitary, rarely in 2-5-flowered racemes, hermaphrodite or male; tepals 0,6-2x0,2-0,5 cm; rostrum 1,6-7,5 cm long, pilose; fruit subterranean, indehiscent, fusiform, 0,9-3,3x0,3-0,7 cm.
Ecology : Brachystegia woodland on Kalahari sand; (wooded) grassland; swamp edge; bowé; rarely in forest; savanna in moist sandy or seasonally marshy places; alluvial soils near rivers; mopane and mixed deciduous woodlands and scrub; riparian forest; seems to be favoured by frequent burning; black alluvium; limestone; with Cyperus margaritaceus (Senegal); loamy soils; clayey-muddy deep soil; 25-3000 m alt.
  The distinction of 3 subspp. is unsatisfactory in delimiting material from, for instance, the Flora Zambesiaca area.
