Biology : Biennial or short-lived perennial herb, 18-200 cm tall; stem simple or sparingly branched with long ascending branches, stiffly erect, terete, finely striate, glabrous or sparingly hairy.

Ecology : Open grassland on plateaux and hill slopes; open (sometimes burnt) woodland with Brachystegia, Uapaca, Protea; usually scattered and occasional; 810-2600 m alt.
  Comprises 2 subspp.: Subsp. ledermannii, in W part of range; - subsp. engleriana; with umbel rays and pedicels with long fine hairs (not hirtellous); in E part of range.
