Ecology : Bushland; grassland; often in swampy ground; steep grassy or rocky slopes; edge of watercourse; 1850-4000 m alt.
  Comprises 2 vars.: - var. thomsonii with glabrous flowers; - var. snowdenii (C. H. Wright) Marais, with puberulous perianth (in lower part), in Uganda, Kenya.
  The only tropical Kniphofia widely cultivated, but not reliably hardy in England
