Biology : Scrambling perennial herb or shrub or tree, with stems 3-5-10 m long and 1 cm , forming dense tangles; very ramose and with densely prickly stems. Similar to H. cannabinus but with shrubby perennial habit.
Ecology : Swamps, lakeshores, riverbanks; edges of gallery forest; savanna; thickets; cultivations; often in water; colluvium; 470- 2800 m alt. S. Africa, Botswana, Caprivi Strip; Madagascar; India; Australia; New Caledonia, Pacific Isl. Comprises 2 subspp.
