Biology : Climber, 5(-20) m high; trunk to 12 cm ?at base; stems strongly prickly (spines on ridges), leafless for most part of the year; sterile tendrils simple, 5-10 cm long.
Ecology : Dry scrub, coastal scrub; stony places, gypsum hills, limestone; localities with high insolation; 0-1600 m alt. Comprises 3 subspp.
