Biology : Shrub or shrubby tree to 6 m; main stem mostly thick, softwoody, ± branched; branches shrubby or lianoid, to 5 m long; sterile tendrils simple, 3-12 cm long, sometimes breaking off and leaving a thorn-like structure.
Ecology : Dry savanna, bushveld; sandy soils, granite; 100-1400 m alt. S. Africa (Transvaal).
