Biology : Terrestrial herb 25-100 cm tall, glabrous, turning black when dried; tubers cylindrical, woolly; cauline leaves 10-30, lanceolate, 6-10x0,5-1,5 cm, overlapping, with a long fine point, the largest in the middle; inflorescence 12-35 cm long, 2,5-4,5 cm Ø, ± densely to 45-flowered; bracts prominent, leaf-like, to 3 cm long; pedicel and ovary 10-18 mm long; flowers lilac or purple, often with white or yellow centre; sepals elliptic-ovate, 5-9x2-5,5 mm; petals ± orbicular, 6-8,4x3,7-8 mm; lip 11-15 mm long, elliptic to orbicular, apex 3-lobed, mid-lobe ± tooth-like or absent; spur absent.
Ecology : Grassland; open woodland; dambo margins; edges of deciduous woodland; marshy grassland; river sides in savanna; short grassland on clay soil; on red soil; Cryptosepalum woodland on sand; bush; Eucalyptus plantations on former grassland; abandoned cultivations; 290-2700 m alt.
  NE S. Africa, Madagascar.
  Comprises 2 vars.: - var. pleistophylla [syn.: B. briantiana Kraenzl. ex De Wild. & T. Durand; B. macclouniei Braid; B. perrieri Schltr.] with flowers drying dark blackish-brown, variable in stature and width of leaves, widespread in tropical Africa, Madagascar; - var. leopoldii (Kraenzl.) Geerinck [bas.: B. leopoldii Kraenzl.; syn.: B. pleistophylla subsp. leopoldii (Kraenzl.) Summerh.; B. pulchra Schltr.] with larger flowers, drying light brown, with a more westerly distribution from Gabon to S Tanzania. – Intermediate forms exist.
