Biology : Terrestrial, rarely epiphytic or lithophytic herb 15-50 cm tall, glandular-pubescent; tubers 2-3, ellipsoid, 2,5-3x1 cm; basal leaf 1(-2), prostrate, elliptic, 4-20x1-5 cm, sometimes mottled in lighter green above, dull purple beneath; inflorescence 3-10 cm long, dense, 3-22-flowered; flowers lilac or purplish pink, lip with dark purple spots; dorsal sepal ovate, 5-7x2,5-5 mm, laterals spreading, 5-7x2,5-5 mm; petals obliquely lanceolate, 4-8x1,5-4 mm; lip ovate, 5-8,5x2,5-5 mm, horizontal, 3-lobed at middle, mid-lobe triangular, much larger and longer than side lobes; spur cylindrical, descending, parallel to ovary, tip swollen.
Ecology : Evergreen forest; rain-forest; open swamps, Miscanthidium swamp; ericaceous shrub; in moist crevices under thick Philippia; open volcanic ridges; road cuts, open soil along road and paths; in moss on seepage slopes; among and on mossy rocks; mossy stream banks; on moss-covered branches and at low level on tree trunks; on rotting tree trunks; on forest floor, in leaf litter; rarely Brachystegia woodland; in deep shade; 1300-2900 m alt. – In leaf litter it “can carpet the ground like bluebells in a wood in Europe” (I. & E. la Croix, o.c.: 192).
