In our Enumération 3: 120, 1995, we referred to 3 vars., viz. var. imbricatum, var. luteum Sanford nom. nov. ined., and var. purpureum Sanford nom. nov. ined. Marshall & Hawthorne (2013: 441) list for Liberia, Nimba County, var. imbricatum and var. purpureum (without author names). It seems that var. purpureum refers to B. imbricatum s. str., with dark purple flowers. Var. luteum seems to correspond with the yellow-flowered B. leucorhachis. For differences between B. fayi, B. imbricatum, B. magnibracteatum, see Vermeulen in Kew Bull. 47: 139, 1992. Lewis & Cribb in Lindleyana 13: 23, 1998, list B. imbricatum as newly found in Tanzania, Udzungwa Mts. This has not been confirmed.
