Biology : Epiphytic herb; pseudobulbs 0,6-9 cm apart, 1-leafed, ellipsoid, 1,2-4x0,5-1,4 cm, 4-angled; leaf oblong to linear, 1,8-17x0,6-1,5 cm, thick; inflorescence 5-20 cm long, 5-40-flowered; peduncle erect or patent, 3-14 cm long; rachis 1,5-8,5 cm long, erect to nodding, slightly swollen and flattened, 4-angled in section, flowers arising from the 2 concave sides, edges sharp, entire to dentate; bracts recurved or spreading, triangular-ovate, 3,5-7,2x1,8-5,2 mm; flowers recurved to spreading, yellow or brownish-orange; sepals ovate, 2,8-6x1,3-2,8 mm; petals oblong to linear, 1,5-3x0,25-0,9 mm, margins entire; lip elliptic, 1,4-2,6x0,8-1,7 mm.
Ecology : Forest; evergreen forest; riverine forest; at high level above ground; 400-2100 m alt.
  Vermeulen (1987: 153-156) divides the species into 3 subspp.: - subsp. unifoliatum with glabrous sepals and coarsely papillose lip (on the ridges); - subsp. flectens (P. J. Cribb & P. Taylor) J. J. Verm. [bas.: B. flectens P. J. Cribb & Taylor] with coarsely papillose sepals and lip (on the ridges) and brownish pseudobulbs, in Tanzania, Malawi; - subsp. infracarinatum (G. Will.) J. J. Verm. [bas.: B. infracarinatum G. Will.; syn.: B. carinatum G. Will.], with glabrous purple lip, in SE part of range.
