Biology : Epiphytic herb; pseudobulbs 0,6-7 cm apart, 1-leafed, orbicular to narrowly ovoid, 1-6x1-3 cm, ± flattened, 2-4-angled; leaf petiolate (1-4 cm), oblong to linear-lanceolate, 7,5-32x1,5-6,5 cm, thick; inflorescence 20-100 cm long, 11-102-flowered; peduncle 25-77 cm long; rachis 4-47 cm long; bracts recurved, elliptic, 16-30x5-13 mm; flowers scattered, recurved to spreading, not fully open, yellowish or greenish, purple-spotted; pedicel and ovary 1-2,5 cm long; sepals elliptic-ovate, 6-14x1,6-4,5 mm, margins glabrous; petals not recurved, falcate, ± linear, 2,5-8x0,2-1 mm, glabrous; lip slightly recurved towards base, oblong to linear, 5-11x1-3,5 mm, margins with short and long, brown or purple hairs.
Ecology : Rain-forest; evergreen forest; riverine forest; swampy forest with Uapaca; farmbush; relict forest in savanna; on e.g., Chlorophora excelsa; in crown of tall trees and on large branches at high level; exposed places; 0-930 m alt.
  Vermeulen distinguishes 3 vars.: - var. schinzianum [syn.: B. mayombeense Garay], with short petals (< 6 mm) and broad lip, tip as wide as or wider than base; - var. irigaleae (P. J. Cribb & Perez Vera) J. J. Verm., with short petals and linear lip, tip much narrower than base, in Ivory Coast-Liberia; - var. phaeopogon (Schltr.) J. J. Verm. [syn.: B. gentilii Rolfe], with long petals (> 7 mm) and lip linear, tip narrower than base.
