Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Epiphytic herb, almost stemless; stem 1-3 cm, often pendent; roots numerous, thin, flexuous; leaves 2-8(-12) in one plane, linear-ligulate, to 15x0,6-1,5 cm, apex unequally 2-lobed, lobes rounded, the shorter often absent; inflorescences borne below the leaves, arching-pendent, few-25-flowered, to 35 cm long, with flowers in upper half; flowers flat, in 2 rows (in the same plane), white, cream or greenish or yellowish white, not scented (column white-yellowish in var. luteoalba, bright orange-red in var. rhodosticta); tepals rounded or obovate, acute, 1-1,5x0,3-0,7 cm, petals broader than sepals; lip rhomboid, acute, 1,5-2x0,7-1,5 cm; spur 2,3-4 cm long, incurved.
Ecology : Forest, gallery forest; woodland; in moist shady localities; on coffee bushes near swampy area; in deep to moderate shade; attached to shrubs, on small twigs and branches, lianes, rarely on trunks; often over water; inselbergs; 700-2330 m alt.
Distinctive by its broad sepals and petals and (var. rhodosticta) bright red column, “the rostellum sticks out across the stigmatic surface, holding the viscidium at its tip in such a way that it will be removed on the head of an insect prospecting for nectar in the spur” (Stewart in Caesiana 28: 92, 2007). The only other orchid with such coloration is Microcoelia corallina.
Comprises 2 vars.: - var. luteoalba (syn.: fa. luteoalba) in SW Uganda, Zaire; - var. rhodosticta (Kraenzl.) J. Stewart [bas: Angraecum rhodostictum Kraenzl.; syn.: Angorchis rhodosticta (Kraenzl.) Kuntze; Aerangis rhodosticta (Kraenzl.) Schltr.; Angraecum albidorubrum De Wild.; Aerangis albidorubra (De Wild.) Schltr.; A. luteoalba fa. rhodosticta (Kraenzl.) Geerinck, Taxonom. 32: 16, 2011].
