Biology : Terrestrial herb 30-90 cm tall, glabrous; tubers ellipsoid, 1,5x1 cm; leaves cauline, 5-10, along stem, the middle ones ± lanceolate, 10-20x1-3,5 cm; inflorescence 6-30 cm long, 10-20-flowered; flowers greenish-white or green and white (lip), scented “attractive or unpleasant or sickly”; bracts 5-22 mm long; pedicel 5-10 mm long; ovary 12-16 mm, 6-ribbed, densely papillose; dorsal sepal oblong-elliptic, convex, 9-11x5 mm, papillose outside; laterals ovate, 10-13x6-8 mm, concave, densely papillose outside; petals 2-lobed from near base; upper lobe adnate to dorsal sepal, linear, 8-10 mm long; lower lobe porrect, oblong, 12-16x2 mm; lip 3-lobed from near base; midlobe deflexed, fleshy, 10-13 mm long; side lobes spreading, curved-lanceolate, 11-13x2-4 mm; spur pendent, 17-29 mm long, incurved, apex ± swollen (var. crassocalcarata).
Ecology : Grassland; marshy dambo; long grass in swamp; vlei edge; open bush; mixed woodland; 1060-1650 m alt.
  Flower buds have a glistening appearance due to the densely papillose outside of sepals. Similar to H. rautaneniana.
