Biology : Robust herb 40-100 cm tall; tubers 1-8, cylindrical, woolly; cauline leaves 4-19, lanceolate to ovate, acute, 2,6-15x1-6,7 cm; inflorescence 1,5-5,3 cm long, cylindrical, 1-41-flowered; flowers green and white, scent spicy; dorsal sepal green, ovate, 15-25x5-10 mm, acute-acuminate, very convex; lower petal lobe oblanceolate-linear, falcate, acuminate, 20-39x2-5,5 mm, projecting forwards and deflexed; lip 26-32 mm long, green, mid-lobe linear, 9-27x0,5-3 mm, bent back at middle; side lobes linear, falcate, acuminate, 12-39x1-4 mm; spur toothed, 20-57 mm long, slender, apex clavate > 15 mm long.
Ecology : Coastal scrub; forest margins; open deciduous woodland; in sandy soils; 0-1300 m alt.
  Morphologically variable species. Cf. B. antennifera.
  Specimens from Zimbabwe cited in Fl. Zambes. 11/1: 45, 1995 may belong to B. antennifera and/or B. steudneri (cf. Bull, Terrestr. Afric. orchids: 12, 2009): specim. Greatrex in GHS 36091; Ball 984.
  Coastal S. Africa.
