Biology : Rhizomatous subshrub or small to medium-sized (elsewhere a large) evergreen tree; 30 cm-30 m (or more) high; bark grey or brown, flaking in patches.

Ecology : Certainly occurs in a greater range of vegetation types and shows a larger variety of growth forms than any other African plant; 1-2600 m alt. (see Fl. Zambes. 4: 198-199, 1978).
  One of the most widespread African tree species; Namibia, Caprivi Strip, Botswana, S. Africa; tropical Arabia.
