Biology : Perennial herb with tuberous roots and a compact woody rootstock; stems 2-3, erect, unbranched, 25-100 cm tall

Ecology : Woodland; clayey grounds; river sides; flooded laterite pan; open forest on sand; grassland sometimes where flooded; damp rocky pastures; quartzite; savanna; meadow with Afrotrilepis pilosa; 380-1900 m alt.
  Extremely variable: an amazing range of variation (Brenan, 1961), but certain features are constant: numerous tuberously thickened root-fibres radiating from the stock; sepals densely barbate above.
  NE Namibia.
