Ecology : Weedy plant on roadsides, waste, cultivated ground, particularly in forest and woodland areas; thornbush; rocky limestone, granite slopes, valleys; swampy spot in Acacia, Terminalia woodland; sometimes in drier habitats; sandy sea-shores; 0-1600 m alt.
  Exceedingly variable.Comprises two subspp.: - subsp. erecta; - subsp. maritima
  Bioko/Fernando Poo; Namibia, S. Africa, Swaziland; Arabia; tropical Asia; tropical and temperate America (cf. Sida 20: 421, 2002); West Indies. – Record from Angola reasonable (Figueiredo & Smith, Pl. Angola: 176, 2008).
