Biology : Erect subshrubby herb, 7-40 cm tall, with several (annual?) shoots from a thick woody rootstock, often with 1-15 narrow tubers to 25 cm long; stems narrowly winged, branched mostly near the base.

Ecology : Open seasonally flooded grassy plains, Combretum-wooded grassland, river flats, rice fields; sometimes hard black soil; margins of dambos and vleis, seasonally burnt wet grasslands, edge of termite-mounds; swamp sides; often saline areas; 400- 1480 m alt.
