Biology : Large liane 8-15-30 m long; stems smooth or longitudinally grooved, 7-20 cm Ø at base, covered with stiff orange-brown hairs (like calyx and pod); old stems wrinkled, glabrescent; leaves to 27 cm long, glabrous;
Ecology : Bushland, forest edges, riverine and coastal moist forests, coastal scrub, river banks; usually by water; often extending to the foreshore; 0-300 m (coast), 850-1800 m alt. (0-10 m in Fl. Zambes. area).
  Very variable species throughout its range; it seems impossible to retain the African subsp. quadrialata (Bak.) Verdc. With large flowers.
  S. Africa (Natal); Madagascar; Comoros, Seychelles, Mascarene Isl.; India, Burma, Indochina, Malay Peninsula and Islands; Papua New Guinea; Philippines; Japan; Australia; Pacific Isl. [see more in the book]
