Biology : Large liane 10-30 cm long; stems glabrous or pubescent, to 20 cm Ø; lateral leaflets very asymmetrical; inflorescence long, pendulous; flowers greenish-white or yellowish, 4-9 cm long;

Ecology : Brachystegia-Uapaca woodland, edges of evergreen forest (remnants), Phragmites grassland (Fl. Zambes. Area); secondary transitional forest with Harungana madagascariensis, forest edge (Sudan, Imatong Mts); riverine forest, Papyrus swamps, etc...
  Variable in indumentum of leaflets and lenght of corolla.
  Comprises 4 subspp. (var. occidentalis Hepper in W part of range to Centr. Afr. Rep.).
  Flowering specimens (without fruit) are very similar to M. ferox.
