Biology : Decumbent perennial herb with decumbent stems 0,4-1,8 m long, bristly to glabrescent, forming adventitious roots; flowers purplish, blue or pink in subumbellate inflorescences with caducous bracts, not spurred.

Ecology : Swampy ground, swamps, streamsides, ditches, moist dambos, edge of rain-forest and swamp forest; mostly in coarse grass and dense herbage; near waterfalls; seepage meadow on edge between upland rain forest with Albizia, Macaranga, Croton, Crotea etc...
  Variable in indumentum of calyx (densely covered with long yellow bristly hairs in var. elliotii; with sparse short not bristly tubercle-based hairs in var. sparse-strigosa from Zaire-Burundi-Uganda-SW Ethiopia).
  Madagascar (var. elliotii).
  Comprises 2 vars.
