Biology : Herb or subshrub with several caespitose stems from a tough woody rhizome-like rootstock; stems 0,07-1,5 m tall, in burnt areas mostly unbranched and often leafless when flowering, but in the absence of fire forming a branched leafy shrub;
Ecology : Open Brachystegia woodland and bushland; grassland; dambo margins; thinly-bushy sandy pastures, along the borders of forests, with Thesium spp., Thunbergia spp.; edge of dry forest land; ± 1200-2000 m alt.
  Comprises 2 vars.: - var. pygmaea; var. hebecarpa J. Léonard (syn.: A. hockii De Wild.; A. homblei De Wild.; A. humilis N. E. Br.; A. recta N. E. Br.; A. youngii Bak. f. ).
