Ecology and distribution
Trop. Afr.
Biology : Erect annual to perennial herb or subshrub ± 0,35-2 m tall with stems thimly strigose or glabrescent by biramous mostly white hairs.

Ecology : Bush margins; cultivations and secondary growth; especially on alluvial soil; seasonally flooded grassland with scattered trees; sandy and sandy-clayey very humid or flooded soils; near permanent pool in sahelian zone; dunes; 0-400 m alt. etc…
  Botswana, S. Africa (Transvaal); Cape Verde Isl.; S Arabia; Socotra; India; Sri Lanka; Malaya; Indochina; Philippines; Indonesia; New Guinea; Australia. - Probably introduced in Madagascar; introduced in tropical America.
  Comprises 2 vars.
  Formerly a major source of indigo dye, but now displaced by I. arrecta .
