Biology : Evergreen woody shrub 1-6 m tall with bole to 15 cm Ø, and young twigs densely velvety pubescent, the young shot tips brown or fulvous.
Ecology : Brachystegia microphylla woodland above evergreen forest; Widdringtonia forest and open woodland or thicket; forest margins, river banks; open rocky slopes; ± 450-2300 m alt.
  S. Africa; Madagascar.
  Comprises 2 subspp.: - subsp. lyallii (syn.: I. obermeijerae Bremek.); - subsp. nyassica J. B. Gillett
