Ecology and distribution

Biology : Evergreen shrub 1-3 m tall; foliage silvery-grey puberulous to tomentose; leaflets rounded at both ends; flowers yellow; pod 4-8-seeded, narrowed between the seeds. The seeds are able to float for a long time; sea-dispersed.
Ecology : Sandy foreshores just above high water mark, often as a pioneer colonist (sand-binder); mangrove (subsp. occidentalis); near sea-level.
  Madagascar, Seychelles, Comoros, Sri Lanka to China, Polynesia; E Australia (subsp. tomentosa. - S. Tomé; E S. America, Caribbean (subsp. occidentalis).
  Comprises 2 subspp. - Subsp. tomentosa [syn.: Sorindeia gondotii Briq. p.p., lecto excl.] in E Africa (and Asia-Australia) having leaflet undersurface with dense matted indumentum; subsp. occidentalis (L.) Brummitt in W Africa. [see more in the book]
