Biology : Small tree 1-3 m, with stout simple or only slightly branched stems; ? rhizomatous; epidermis of branchlets purplish brown, flaking off to show underbark of uncertain colour; stipules spinescent, straight, in pairs, fused basally into "ant-galls";
Ecology : Shrub- and dwarf-tree grassland, locally gregarious and abundant in black soils of flood-plains and valleys, margins of seasonal swamps; 1130-1220 m alt.
  Variable in pubescence of young stems (var. bullockii glabrous) and in size of leaves.
  Comprises 2 vars.; however the status of var. induta Brenan is doubtful.
